Seed Morphological Properties Related to Taxonomy in Silene L. Species

چکیده
Silene taxonomy, traditionally based on morphological characteristics, is now driven by DNA sequence analysis. While the usefulness of both and molecular methods remains undisputed, there an interest in identification characteristics useful taxonomy. A quantitative analysis seeds belonging to species presented here seed image samples for 95 populations 52 (49 3 related species). According silhouette lateral views their images, are classified into three groups: smooth, rugose echinate. The measurements taken dorsal include area, circularity, roundness, aspect ratio solidity; differences between groups found all characteristics. Solidity area corresponding convex hull. It convexity measurement with lowest coefficient variation. In views, solidity values conserved, while groups. group echinate has highest belong S. subg. Behenantha Lychnis. smooth contains mainly Silene, Lychnis absent.

Transgenerational changes in seed longevity in Silene
Seed longevity, a fundamental plant trait for ex situ conservation and persistence in the soil of many species, varies across populations and generations that experience different climates. Mondoni et al. (pp. 1257–1263) study seeds from alpine and lowland populations of Silene vulgaris and show that seed longevity has a genetic basis but may show strong adaptive responses, which are associated...
متن کاملMolecular and morphological taxonomy of Pythium species isolated from soil in West Azarbaijan province (N.W. Iran)
Pythium is a fungus-like genus with worldwide distribution that is found in most terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It is a species-rich genus contains important plant pathogenic species. Little is known on the systematics of Pythium in West Azarbaijan province (N.W. Iran). Thus, the aim of this study was to identify 200 isolates collected from different cultivated soils of West Azarbaijan pro...
متن کاملNUMERICAL TAXONOMY AND SEED PROTEIN ANALYSIS OF HYOSCYAMUS SPECIES IN IRAN
Numerical taxonomy and seed storage protein analysis of Hyoscyamus species of Iran was carried out with the aim to illustrate species inter-relationship and to check the sub-generic taxonomic treatment proposed for the genus. Cluster analysis of morphological and protein data grouped the species in three separate clusters which supports the relationships of H. niger with H. reticulatus and H. k...
متن کاملFactors affecting relative seed fitness and female frequency in a gynodioecious species, Silene acaulis
Sex-ratio variation is common among gynodioecious species. One argument predicts that when sex is determined by a combination of nuclear and cytoplasmic factors, the frequency of females will be determined by genetic rather than ecological factors. An alternative argument suggests that the relative seed fitness of the female and hermaphroditic morphs will control female frequency. Hence, sex-ra...
متن کاملGibberellins and Stem Growth as Related to Photoperiod in Silene armeria L.
Stem growth and flowering in the long-day plant Silene armeria L. are induced by exposure to a minimum of 3 to 6 long days (LD). Stem growth continues in subsequent short days (SD), albeit at a reduced rate. The growth retardant tetcyclacis inhibited stem elongation induced by LD, but had no effect on flowering. This indicates that photoperiodic control of stem growth in Silene is mediated by g...
